💻 It's a bird. It's a plane. It's...

...Helijet's new eVTOL aircraft. Plus, the Island company turning atmospheric carbon into rocks.

Welcome to this week’s Sunday Briefing. In this issue, read about reshaping existing industries for sustainability, carbon sequestering off BC’s coast, Vancouver Island earthquake research, and plenty more.

Now onto today’s briefing. It’s 760 words: a three-minute read.

-Emily,

By the way, if you're not already subscribed, you can fix that here.

Is it a helicopter or is it a plane? I’m still not quite sure, but the electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft is coming to Canada.

Accompanied by Premier David Eby and Skye Carapetyan, sales director for the aircraft manufacturer BETA, Helijet president and CEO Danny Sitnam announced plans to become the first Canadian air carrier to provide passenger and cargo services using the eVTOL.

Helijet says the five-passenger aircraft will be used to provide quieter, lower cost, sustainable air transportation for travellers in southwestern B.C. and the Pacific Northwest.

According to Helijet, the electric aircraft’s vertical take-off and landing capability will improve the company’s emergency response, air ambulance, and organ transfer services in the Lower Mainland, as well as support rural and remote communities that do not have access to affordable and convenient air service.

🏙️ Community catchup, powered by VIATEC

The VIATEC Community Awards will take place on November 30 in Carson Hall at the Victoria Conference Centre (720 Douglas Street.)

The ceremony brings the tech community together to connect, spotlight, and celebrate some of the year’s most notable companies and individuals within Victoria’s $4 billion tech sector. This year the coalition is aiming to increase inclusivity and ensure that the broader tech community knows that they belong, even if they are not members of a specific organization.

Nominations are now open for any Victoria tech company, as are opportunities for sponsorships slots. Early bird tickets are on sale now.
