Nearly $2M invested into Vancouver Island research infrastructure

The province is putting $30 million into local businesses via the BC Knowledge Development Fund.

Welcome to this week’s Thursday Digest. In this issue, read about new funding for Vancouver Island research and innovation, and a Victoria firm that's launched nationally. Have a great day. We'll see you again Sunday.

Nearly $2M going to Vancouver Island research and innovation infrastructure

As part of the provincial government’s StrongerBC Economic Plan, it’s investing more than $30 million in 120 post-secondary research projects through the BC Knowledge Development Fund (BCKDF). Among the eight institutions getting funding, Vancouver Island University and the University of Victoria are receiving a combined $1.9 million.

Projects supported through the funding range from genomic and metabolic solutions for B.C. agriculture to studies on healthy brain development in pre-term infants.

VIU was awarded $218,823 for three research projects focused on eco-evolutionary dynamics, sustainability, and resilience.

UVic was awarded $1,694,873 for 10 research projects that range in focus from biomedical analysis to data, brain structures, public health priorities, and more.

We spoke to Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation, about the funding and its role in driving innovation in B.C. You can read our interview with him in our Sunday Digest email later this week.
